How Inner Child Healing Can Help You Prioritize Connection in Your Relationships

We all have a tendency to want to be right and prove our point, even if it means disregarding the feelings and needs of others. As a soul coach, I firmly believe that authentic connections with ourselves and others are integral to our spiritual growth and evolution. However, too often we prioritize being right over making those connections, creating barriers in our relationships and hindering our journey towards a more fulfilling life. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of prioritizing connection over being right, and I'll share some insights and tools I use with my clients as a coach to help you navigate this shift.

Recently, I was reading the book Peaceful Living: Daily Meditations for Living with Love, Healing, and Compassion by Mary Mackenzie and came across the quote, "I want to connect more than I want to be right." These words deeply resonated with me and reminded me of a time when I prioritized being right over connection and ended up hurting someone I cared about in the process.

During a heated argument with a friend, I became so focused on proving my point that I didn't listen to her perspective. It caused damage to our relationship, and I realized my need to be right was causing harm to those I cared about. I had to take a hard look at myself and my beliefs, and it wasn't easy. But through my own inner child healing and parts work, I shifted my mindset and embraced the power of authentic connections.

Being vulnerable and honest about my experiences taught me a valuable lesson: that connection is more important than being right. When we prioritize connection, we create a safe and supportive space for deeper understanding, empathy, and growth. We allow ourselves to truly listen to the other person and their perspective, and in doing so, we open ourselves up to new possibilities for connection and growth.

The Link Between Being Right and Our Childhood Experiences

As children, we are taught that being right is the key to success and acceptance. From getting good grades to winning competitions, we are often rewarded for our achievements, creating an inner belief that being right is the only way to feel worthy or loved. However, this belief can create a barrier between ourselves and others, hindering our ability to connect authentically.

It is essential to explore the root causes of our need to be right and heal the wounds that may be blocking our ability to connect with others.

My favorite approach to prioritizing connection is through inner child healing and parts work. By exploring our internal world, we can identify the experiences and beliefs that have shaped our need to be right. We can then work on healing those wounds and shifting our mindset to prioritize connection over being right. This approach can help us create a safe and supportive space for deeper understanding, empathy, and growth in our relationships.

For example, let's say that as a child, you were always praised for being right or getting good grades. This praise may have created a belief that being right is the only way to feel valued and loved. As an adult, this belief may cause you to prioritize being right over connection, leading to hurtful interactions with others. By exploring your internal world through inner child healing and parts work, you can identify and heal the wounds that created this belief. You can then shift your mindset and prioritize connection in your relationships.

Here are a few journal prompts to help you explore your inner child and parts and prioritize connection in your life:

  • Think about a time when you felt the need to be right in a relationship. What emotions did you experience, and what parts of yourself were driving those emotions?

  • Consider your inner child. What messages did they receive about being right when they were growing up? How can you nurture your inner child with compassion and love to help them heal?

  • Reflect on a relationship that has suffered due to a lack of connection. What parts of yourself may be contributing to the disconnection, and how can you work with those parts to prioritize connection instead?

  • Think about a relationship in your life that you feel deeply connected to. What parts of yourself are contributing to that connection, and how can you cultivate more of those parts in your other relationships?

  • Consider what it would be like to prioritize connection over being right in your relationships. How might your relationships change, and how would you feel?

By working with your inner child and parts, you can heal those wounds and start to shift your focus towards connection.

Consider how you can nurture your inner child with compassion and love, and explore the different parts of yourself that may be contributing to the need to be right. You can start to create a more authentic and fulfilling life and build deeper connections with those around you.
